Eleven more citizens are better prepared to function in an emergency or disaster situation after participating in the Fall CERT Class. This time the 20-hour class was held over the course of one weekend. Class members met at EMS Station 1 in El Dorado on the evening of Friday, September 30th, and then again all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Participants learned about disaster preparedness, light search and rescue, basic fire suppression, disaster medical operations, and many more topics. The class wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with a final exercise that put everyone's new skills to use. To view more pictures from the class, check out the class album on our Facebook page (search for "Butler County, Kansas Emergency Management"). The weekend of June 10th through June 12th was a busy one for area responders. Over the course of those three days, they took part in a locomotive extrication drill, a TransCAER Anhydrous Ammonia Tour training, and a highway rescue full scale exercise! Participants came from as far away as Fort Riley and Rice County.

Butler County CERT members once again showed what they are made of when they helped out with the 2011 Tour de Cure bike ride. On May 21st, twenty-two team members put in a combined 214 hours working traffic control, assisting with rest stops and generally helping to insure the safety of the participants. As always, they were efficient, professional, dedicated, and hard-working. But don't just take our word for it... read the thank you letter below to see what others have to say about CERT!

On Tuesday, March 22nd, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was held to thank CERT members for their time and efforts during the previous year. This year, three "Volunteers of the Year" were selected. New members David and Roberta Skaggs were recognized for jumping in with both feet and contributing 400+ hours to the team and the county in their first year. Janet "Mom" Smith was also given a well-deserved award, honoring her for all of the years she has put in looking out for the members... and keeping the Coordinator in line!
